After almost 4 years of parenting, and two kids, I am just starting to develop a system for kids’ clothes organization. Organizing all of those little items of clothing can be such an overwhelming task if you try to do it all at once. Check out my system to organize kids’ clothing in 5 easy steps. Below are the steps that I take daily, weekly, monthly, and for different seasons and holidays to keep my kids’ clothes organized.
Daily Steps
As the kids get dressed in the morning, I make a mental note if an item is looking like it’s getting small. At the end of the day if there is a hole, rip, or something that isn’t going to be fixable, it goes in the trash.
Weekly Steps
I do all of the kids’ laundry weekly, usually on the weekends. As something comes out of the dryer, if I saw it was too small when worn, it goes into the outgrown clothes’ boxes that I keep in their closets.
I rotate their drawers weekly, putting the clean folded clothes in the back and moving the clothes that were in the back last week up to the front. It’s a system I’ve developed over time to avoid wearing the same few outfits over and over while neglecting half of their wardrobe.
A tip for toddlers who want to wear the same clothes over and over… I “forget” to watch certain things of Little A’s that she is wearing week after week. It allows more clothing to be worn and rotated through. This process also preserves the most loved items from washing and wearing them out quickly.
Monthly Steps
Towards the end of each month, I try to prepare for the next month. I do a quick check of the closet where I keep things that don’t fit yet or aren’t appropriate for the weather. Each month I will pull out and wash things for the next size up.
Seasonal Organization
Sometimes there are things that I notice we need for that next size up. For example, if we only have 1 pair of pajamas in the next size up, I make a list in my planner. It allows me to know what we need or will need soon. If I notice a crazy 10% cashback deal on Rakuten (formerly Ebates). Or even better, a crazy cashback deal and a huge sale at Carter’s, Baby Gap, or Target, I can stock up on that next size and get cashback at the same time.

When a new season arrives, I change out all of the dresser drawers at once. I do keep a couple of my favorite items from the previous season in one drawer. I keep an item or two in case of a rogue weather day. Otherwise, I switch everything over to that season’s appropriate clothing.
Everything that comes out with the season change for Baby J, I move to the does not fit bin. We live in New England, so by the time the same season comes next year, odds are the seasonal clothes are not going to fit a baby who is growing exponentially over that first 1-2 years.
As for Little A, who is older and growing at a slower rate, I have a different process. If it looks like something may fit again next year, I move it to a next season bin in her closet. But if it barely fits this year, it goes into the outgrown bin.
Holiday Organization
I am a sucker for cute holiday outfits! This means that we tend to have a lot of clothing that may not be worn again after that holiday. If it’s a cute comfy outfit like a onesie and pants, I sent it to daycare as a backup outfit. I don’t mind an out of date backup outfit for a blowout, art mess, or food spill.
As for Little is gorgeous holiday dresses, I let her wear them as dress up outfits. Or I give them to a family member/friend or donate them to families in need. I have yet to try consignment shops as it seems to be a time-consuming process.
